Great Lake Swimmers & the BP oil spill

(english translation below)

Canadian indie-folkerers the Great Lake Swimmers have made one of the songs from their upcoming album available for listening. "Ballad Of A Fisherman's Wife" tels a story about the disaster that has stricken the people of the Gulf of Mexico's coastal region. The BP oil spill - the greatest oil-related disaster in history, has destroyed almost entire ecosystems of this biodiversity hotspot, and also made all local sea foods too dangerous for human consumption. So this is the greatest ordeal for ones making a living from sea food exploitation - and especially small scale fishermen.

Here's what the singer-songwriter and band's frontman Tony Dekker said about the origins of Ballad:

"Ballad Of A Fisherman's Wife" was written after hearing, with great dismay, news about the oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Most striking and heart-felt to me were the sentiments of outrage from those who made their living in and along these waters, especially the fishermen, and especially their wives. I wanted to comment on this ongoing crisis from that very specific viewpoint."

Though it's not the most striking song made by Dekker, musically or lyrically, the fact that it has dominant vocals and simple structure makes the message of the song clear to hear. It also comes at a good moment - as a reminder that, though the leak has been capped and media has been quiet since - the crisis is far, far from over.

The BP or The Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill crisis has startet with an explosion on the Deep Water Horizon platform of British Petroleum. 11 workers died on spot. Oil gushing from the wellhead lasted form 20th of April to 15th of July 2010. In that time, 4,9 million barrels of crude oil was released in the water and certain amount had reached the coasts of the Bay. It left behind millions of dead and oil-contaminated creatures, harmed fragile ecosystems and wildlife and destroyed local economy.

Country music + environmentalism = my heart is full

John Anderson, "Seminole Wind"

Notice that the song was made in 1992. A few months before the famous Rio Earth Summit took place, and surely before all the recent mainstream green hype. So I guess that it wasn't a matter of trend, like eco-oriented commercial music of today.

Whether you consider the sight of Indians dancing around a cowboy hypocritical or symbolical, still, the point of the song is fair. In my humble opinion is that the sadness for the loss of our natural environment is equal among all the Earthlings.
And the fiddle is wrist-slitting.

duhovi platana || ghost platanus

On 26th of February 2010. Belgrade (Serbia) authorities conducted what you could call a tree genocide and an ecocide. A massive cut-down of about 500 of century old plane trees had taken place on one of the Belgrade's longest streets, The Boulevard of King Alexander. Lame excuses were made: it was said that "experts" have determined that "all trees are terminally ill and are dangerous for public", although the plane trees of the same generation were left untouched in the other half of the Boulevard. Protests failed and the cutting had taken place in the end of February, leaving one of the most busy and polluted streets of Belgrade bare naked, without shade and natural air filtering. Speculations are diverse, but exact motives for this misdeed are still unknown.

Boulevard's plane trees were given to Belgrade by Austria after the WW I, as a part of the war reparations.

Environmentally Grim Photography

Neke moje fotografije nastale u proteklih par godina.

Some photos I made in the last couple of years. Strangely, despite my interests in ecology, environmental sciences and Decay of the World, these are the only ones that have some deeper environmentalist thoughts related to those subjects.

Click on them for more details (on flickr) // klik na njih za više detalja (na flickr-u)
